Gilas cadets shake off scrappy Thais to win title

The Gilas Pilipinas cadets shook off scrappy hosts Thailand 97-80 to win the gold in the 5th Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Stankovic Cup on Saturday.

The nationals banked on clutch hits by pro reinforcement Troy Rosario and Rey Mark Belo to keep the Thais at bay.

Singapore placed third in the sub-regional FIBA-sanctioned tournament.

According to FIBA Asia, the top two finishers qualify for the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge to be held in Iran from September 9 to 18.

The Thais opened the match with a 7-0 run in the first quarter before the Philippines came to within 1 point with five minutes left in the period.

A drive by Arellano’s Jiovani Jalalon gave the cadets their first taste of the lead 12-11 with 3:35 in the quarter that ended 22 all.
The gold medal match was a nip and tuck affair all the way to the 4th quarter as the Thais managed to match the firepower of the Gilas cadets.

Rosario pumped in 15, including an 8-point explosion in the third, in the first three periods to keep the cadets’ heads above water.
A similar spark by Mac Belo in the 4th enabled Gilas to pull away 77-66 at the 6:46 mark. — APG, GMA News
